Why homecare will be increasingly important after Brexit

Brexit. Are you fed up of the word yet?  With an impending general election on the horizon we can be sure that we have not heard the last of the term just yet.

The TUC says that some  50,000 citizens from the European Economic Area work in the NHS, including over 9,000 doctors, 18,000 nurses, midwives and health visitors and 2,500 allied health professionals, such as physios and radiographers. Of course to those who want Brexit, immigration is only a cost.

However, some say that the figure could be much higher when it comes to health and social care – and is probably around the 215k mark. But, whatever the amount is there can be no denying the impact if these people were to leave the service.

The figures were highlighted recently by the Liberal Democrats as the party said it would push to guarantee an immediate “NHS passport” for EU nationals who work directly for the NHS.

Nick Clegg, former deputy Prime Minister and now Liberal Democrat Brexit, spokesman, said: “The NHS would collapse if we told all the doctors, nurses and other valued staff from other EU countries that they were no longer welcome here.

“Not only would that be a slap in the face to those who have cared for and helped so many British people back to health, it would also seriously damage health care in this country and put the nation’s very health at risk,” he said. “You can’t have a hard Brexit and a strong NHS, or a hard Brexit and an economy that delivers the homes Britain needs.”

Meanwhile, after the general election was announced Labour has gone in hard on the NHS claiming workers are “undervalued, overworked and underpaid” in recent interviews.

Whatever the political situation is now, or will be in the future, all quarters agree that technology will play a role in cutting costs and helping to reduce man hours.
